Mildew and mold in homes is a problem for so many people. It is generally regarded as a major nuisance and health hazard. It often appears as a damp, smelly, blackened area and can spread quite quickly if not dealt with at once.

Many homes have problems with damp and ensuing mold, whether it is black mold that you can see or it is a problem that you can only detect by its damp, musty smell.

This situation can be due to some kind of water leak somewhere, due to worn pipes and pipe joints, a dripping tap, poor drainage and poor ventilation among other reasons.

The most common areas affected include the garage, the attic, the kitchen, cellar and bathroom. It is very important to deal with the problem as soon as possible because it can represent a danger to health, especially if the mold spores are breathed in to a great extent such as when clearing away old damp carpet that has been stored in a garage, or clearing old musty herbage from gardens.

What procedures should be taken?

The best procedure when clearing or cleaning moldy items is to wear a protective breathing mask. This helps protect against the possibility of contracting any diseases caused by toxic mold and also helps you to avoid breathing in any fumes from cleaning chemicals that may be being used for the cleanup. Mold exposure symptoms may show up as sneezing or wheezing, coughing or rashes. If these signs start to show up when you are in a mold problem area then it is best to get it checked up by your local health practitioner to eliminate any chance that you have been infected or to get appropriate treatment if needed.

How do I clean Up?

You can probably deal with, or kill mold by yourself in most cases, as long as you know what you are doing and it is not always necessary to call in the remediation specialists. You could prepare yourself by reading a mold removal guide first. The first step would be to check out the source of the problem. Is it a leaky pipe? Is it down to there not being enough circulating air in the room? Have you recently had a flood?

Fix The Pipe!

Once the root cause has been identified, do something to fix it. Fix the leaky pipe, invest in an air ventilator, air purifier, air conditioner or dehumidifier. Take whatever steps you need to take to make the area dry and well aired. Spray any smaller visible mold areas with bleach, or a solution of Moldzyme, which is one of the latest eco friendly mold solutions, remembering to wear a protective mask at all times. This is because whenever you are doing remediation work on mold infected areas the spores will be disturbed and start to fly around in the air, so of course you don’t want to breathe them in. For larger areas, you may want to make use of a fogger or a hose attached to a garden pump.

Mold Prevention Measures

Once the area is free from contamination it would be advisable to cover it again with a protective antifungal or fungus resistant coating. A natural product that some people would recommend is somthing called liquid colloidal silver, which acts as a natural fungicide. It kills any fungus or bacteria by literally ‘smothering’ the spores or microbes and you can even learn how to make it yourself in larger quantities for regular household cleaning and medical use. You can research some of the guidelines for use and general information about colloidal silver if you click here.

It is not always that easy to kill mold once it has arrived. Mold in houses, particularly in bathrooms and basements, is a widespread problem.

The ideal solution is to prevent it happening in the first place.

This is usually down to keeping the place well aired and ventilated and applying antifungal solutions to walls and carpeted areas that might be prone to damp.

Increase Bathroom Ventilation

Many bathrooms within a house are little and become wet and rancid very easily. For some people merely utilizing the average cleaning supplies can be to much because the smell is isolated. This is why it is so important to discover a way to remove the smell and any moisture before it has the ability to hurt you or mold is allowed to grow in the room.

If you are fortunate than the room will be settled in a portion of the house where there is a window or where you are able to install one. Fresh air is the safest kind of ventilation that anyone has the ability to utilize. Keep it open when you take a bath, are cleaning, or when there is a unusual odor. The fresh smell from the fresh air will aid to withdraw the bad scent and also to provide the steam and moisture a way to escape.

There are numerous homes that have the bathroom set in such a place where there is no manageable way to construct a window or possibly the window is simply not enough airing for it. The next easiest thing you will be able to use is an exhaust fan. These are made to draw the air full of the odor and moisture from the room.

It will work its way through an air duct that runs to the outside. The bigger the fan the easier you can keep the room smelling good and free from mildew and mold. In some cities each house is needed to have some type of fan for the room.

These bathroom exhaust fans have the ability to be wired to be turned on through the light switch or by using its own electrical switch. The more expensive it is the stronger the fan will be.

If you have reason to believe you have a mold problem in your home, you may need to consider getting professional help.

Investigating your own home for mold problems is certainly a step you should take, but if your sleuthing does not come up with solid evidence then you will need to get some testing done. Though it is an expense most homeowners would prefer to avoid, it can be a serious health issue and should not be taken lightly.

Investigating on your own before bringing in a professional is fine, so long as your investigations do not end up disturbing the growth and spreading the dangerous spores into the air.

> Remove spores with air purification

The easiest way to begin searching is to follow your nose; mold and mildew have a distinctive smell, which is generally associated with damp surroundings.

Indeed, it needs moisture to survive, so the best place to start is any area where you know there has been water leaking or seeping into the home. This could be something as large as a roof or plumbing leak, or simple condensation from constant steamy showers or an improperly tuned air conditioning unit.

Surface mold is easily detected, and generally easy to dispose of. Many commercial mold killers exist on the market and most do a fine job. The more insidious types, however, are often hidden behind walls or under carpets, and this is where specialized testing comes in.

Professional testers have the tools and expertise to uncover any evidence hidden in many parts of the household. Often they will take cultures and grow the spores in a lab, to discover what kinds of mold are growing, and whether they are benign or dangerous. Though scent is a good indicator, it is not always practical to sniff around the entire home, and sometimes areas are missed. Also, some types are less ‘nose-worthy’ than others, though no less damaging to your families health.

If you have had a leak or flood or other water intensive problem in the home, there is a good chance that mold has had a chance to grow. The spores simply float around in the air, and it doesn’t take much to allow them to thrive.

However, unless the area remains moist, it will dry up. This doesn’t mean the problem is necessarily solved, as the spores still end up airborne, and ultimately breathed in.

If your own investigations have proved fruitless, but you are still convinced there may be moldy growths in the home, then testing is imperative. The cost can be significant, however, so it is best to try and find out as much on your own as possible. However, the cost is often worth it, when hidden problems are discovered in places you might not have expected.

It is also a good idea to have testing done when buying a home, as part of the general building inspection, as the history of the home is not always disclosed. In the event of a flood, professional mold removal services can be quite ruthless, often cutting out large pieces of wallboard to remove and sanitize breeding grounds. Some homeowners prefer to avoid the expense of this kind of large-scale disaster relief, but the result can often be hidden in the walls. As a home buyer, you want to be sure that you are not buying hidden mold as well.

Though testing can be expensive, if you suspect there may be mold but you have not been able to find any, it may be worth it. It can cause many serious illnesses, particularly respiratory sickness, so removing any signs is imperative. The cost of not testing for, and removing mould will ultimately be born by the health of your family.

If you suspect that you have household mold and water damage it is best to have it remedied as soon as possible before it constitutes a major health hazard for you and your family

Indoor outbreaks can cause wall, furniture, carpet, drapery, book, and important paper document damage.

They can also cause allergic reactions such as bronchial irritation and asthma attacks. The common types seen in most home and work environments can actually become a major issue if not addressed quickly.

There are a few steps you can take to help reduce the chances of an outbreak happening in your home or business. However, if you have found extensive growth already, contact a professional mold remediation company right away to get started on clean-up.

The most important tool you can have in your arsenal against growth is knowledge. What is mold? In what types of environments does it thrive? How can such colonies be safely removed? Knowing what you’re up against will make it that much easier to prevent and treat mold colonies.

What is Mold?

They are microscopic fungi that grow in humid environments. Unlike plants that require photosynthesis to thrive, they survive by secreting enzymes onto the organic matter they are inhabiting and then absorbing the degraded remains of that matter. Because they don’t require a high level of nutrients to survive they can grow on nearly any organic matter, from food products to paper products.

Why Should It Be Removed?

Many people will develop allergic reaction to the spores put off by large colonies. If a person touches a mold colony in anyway, there is the chance they could develop a form of dermatophytes, like athlete’s foot or jock itch. Mycotoxins are liquid or gaseous compounds secreted by most colonies and are considered some of the most toxic chemicals on the planet. If this is ingested, both humans as well as animals can get seriously ill. This is why prompt attention to kill mold and clean-up is necessary.

How Can I Prevent Moldy Growth?

To reduce the risk of developing a problem, lower the humidity levels in your home or office. Spores can live on most any organic matter but they will not survive in dry climates. If you discover a water leak, get it fixed right away. If floods have damaged your home or office, dry the affected area as soon as possible. Every day that goes by in which an outbreak is not treated is property lost.

How Can I Tell If I Have An Outbreak?

A professional detection service can help you determine if it has taken up residence in your home or office. However, professional help is not always necessary. Spores are easily spotted, even in smaller colonies, and sometimes put off a musky, earthy smell. If parts of your building are cool, dark, and humid, you can be pretty sure you have these smelly fungi growing there.

Can I Clean It Myself?

If the outbreak is fairly small and contained, you may want to try removing the mold yourself. Wet vacuum cleaners can help remove water from floors and carpets quickly, helping to eliminate the chances of an outbreak. Once the carpet or upholstery has been cleaned, however, you must also clean the vacuum itself, as it can accumulate inside the tank and hose. Damp removal, such as scrubbing the affected areas with water and detergent, is simple and easy but not always effective for established colonies. Killing mold is generally a job for the professional

If you do take on mold yourself, be sure to wear protective rubber gloves and a facemask or breathing mask . Also make sure the cleaned area dries quickly to prevent new colonies from developing.

When Should I Call A Professional?

If you are uncomfortable with or unsure how to properly treat a problem with regular mold killing products you should hire a mold remediation services. Professionals use advanced detection and cleaning technologies to safely clean-up an outbreak and restore materials and structures. Once problem areas are detected, trained removal experts are able to use advanced HEPA vacuums and chemical treatments to fully rid the area of spores. Some remediation services will even offer to install special dehumidifying systems after the clean up is complete.

If you are experiencing problems that go beyond your abilities to handle, research your removal options online or contact a professional remediation service.

Water damage can also refer to the mouldy growth and mildew in the home because flood water is often quite dirty. The combination of excess moisture and bacteria in the water can be the ideal environment for organisms to grow.

Basements can be such a headache and are notoriously damp or wet – unless we do something about it and here is an article which describes basement problems and possible remedies.

There are so many aspects to basement waterproofing but in this article I am going to focus solely on basement sub-slab perimeter drains (a.k.a. interior french drains). The process for installing these drainage systems is designed to relieve the hydrostatic pressure under the basement floor. Properly designed drain systems will accept water into them at a depth and pace to ensure that the water level does not reach the bottom side of your basements floor, or slab. The result of a properly installed and free flowing sub-slab drain is a dry basement by eliminating seepage and future flooding.

The installation process involves removal of 8″-18″ of concrete around the interior perimeter of your basement, and/or in chosen water problem areas. A sump location must be chosen and dug out. All of the concrete must be removed and a trench must be dug 8″-12″ graded from a far high point to the sump location. The grade is a necessary step in order to properly pitch the drain pipe. Virtually every basement waterproofing company has their own company procedures for drain installation.

The drain is installed, usually accompanied by large amounts of river gravel or processed stone, it is lead to a sump location and then the drain opening is closed up and recemented. The sump pump(s) is installed and the discharge line(s) is fed to the outside of the building. Many companies offer drip moldings for the perimeter and vapor barriers so that water coming through wall-cracks and pipe penetrations can be collected in the drain below the floor. These are the main features of an interior french drain, though there are many other custom offerings from companies worldwide.

So how is Green Bear Innovations, Inc. going to help this industry go green. We have aligned our corporate values with waterproofing industry experts and come up with solutions to what we believe are flaws in the common designs of these wet basement systems. Most basement waterproofing companies train their installers to jackhammer the entire perimeter of the basement. This poses three major problems:

1. Jackhammering a basement floor, or slab, with no detached edges causes a tremendous amount of stress and leads to microfractures in the remaining portion of the slab. Instead of having a wet basement or a flooding problem, now you could have a radon problem, as these microfractures turn into floor cracks.

2. The jagged edge that is created by the jackhammer is NOT a clean cut. The cement is cracked in many directions including underneath the floor. When recementing is done, not only does it look terrible, but due to the fact that old concrete and new cement does not bond, in a year or two you may have efflourescence and maybe even mold seeping through where these two types of cement meet. (See below for more information about how Green Bear Innovations will ensure that his does not happen to you.)

3. Jackhammering is very labor intensive, time intensive and causes silica dust from the concrete to cover everything in your basement that is uncovered.

So what’s the solution? Green Bear Innovations, Inc. will first use a concrete saw to cut a straight edge around the basement perimeter through the entire slab. We use a dust collector during this part of the installation process to reduce the amount of dust that can potentially settle on anything in sight. Once the perimeter cutting is complete, cross cuts will be made to section the waste concrete. A jackhammer, or hammer drill, will then be used to separate any stubborn slab pieces. Because the waste portion of the slab and the remaiing basement floor are detached, there is no risk of floor cracking.

We mentioned above that we will ensure that efflourescence and mold will not seep through the separation made by this installation method. What GBI does is thoroughly clean and wash the cut edge and apply a cement bonding glue (SilPro) immediately before the recementing process begins. You will never have anything creeping through this man made separation in your basement floor.

Green Bear Innovations is dedicated to using recycled/recyclable materials during all installations. We use 3″ and 4″ HDPE perforated pipe which is 100% recyclable and in the near future recycled HDPE pipe will be available. We use as little PVC as we can. PVC is recyclable but remains the number one pollutant of our world’s oceans due to the extensive recycling processes required for reuse.

GBI has eliminated an entire days labor and more, not by cutting corners, but by reducing the need for river gravel and recycling much of the soil that is extracted from the trench. We wrap our pipe with a stone mesh made from recycled plastic and place recycled low-float plastic pellets between the pipe and the mesh. This process eliminates the need for river gravel/processed stone and allows us to reuse the soil that was removed from the trench. Sandy and clay soils are mixed with clean fill before being used to ensue that water can freely enter the drain pipe.

Green Bear Innovations, Inc. offers energy efficient sump pumps and battery back up systems with all sub-slab basement drainage systems and even offers a water powered back up system. We also offer foundation wall vapor retarders and drip moldings made from 100% recycled plastics.

In summary, GBI is innovating the basement waterproofing industry in many ways. Our industry experience and extensive research have helped us save the earth’s resources and save consumers money in a home improvement sector that is known for resource gluttony and unaffordability.

Mold and mildew is a very common problem in many parts of the world and has been around a long time.

Mold and mildews have been around as far back as the discovery of the earth as a planet. Mold, infestation is from the fungi family. It is generally made up of air borne allergic tiny particles and reproduces through the air. Mainly the toxic mold and mildews are found in damp and wet areas, growing on food and even on wood surfaces. The mold kingdom includes the yeast, mushrooms and the mold itself. Mildew is a kind of mold that is white in color.

Molds are microscopic and until a large enough mass has accumulated they can only be seen with the aid of a microscope. Because they are so small, even a very thin film of dust and debris will yield an abundance of food.

Molds cannot grow without moisture. First, moisture is required in order for the mold spore (the reproductive seed-like structure of many molds) to germinate. After germination the mold’s hyphae (or root like structures) secrete digestive enzymes that break down organic material. Moisture is necessary for the enzymes to be effective. Then the hyphae absorb the nutrients by ‘bathing’ in the digested mixture. Basement mold cleaning requires removing moisture and this is one of the most effective methods for halting growth along with mold removal products.

Allergies are the most common form that is caused by indoor molds. Stachybotrys is a greenish black fungus, recognised as the black mold. About the Stachybotrys it of said Stachybotrys grows well on extremely wet building materials containing cellulose that have remained wet for more than a week. It produces mycotoxins that can irritate skin and mucous membranes. One potent mycotoxin produced by Stachybotrys is called satratoxin; it is also toxic when inhaled. Extreme care should be taken when this organism is amplified indoors. Black molds are also play an important part in irritation of human being like respiratory problem, running nose, watery eyes, burning nose and red and itchy skin. Fungi are considered as the irritants of these diseases.

A proliferation of mold and mildew can be the hall mark of hot and humid summer. The humidifier and the home air purifier for indoor would be of immense help to drive away molds.

Black mold is kind of like the silent assassin because it can cause harm to you in the home and you wouldn’t even know it was harming you until it was. How does mold grow so fast? How come it moves to different areas in no time at all? A lot of other home owners are asking the same questions and are still trying to get more information on their mold problem. Everyone needs to know all they can about the different aspects of black mold. I am sure if you keep on reading that you will improve your knowledge about black mold to help prevent your family from any type of mold exposure.

Do you know what black mold is? Black mold is a fungus that grows from receiving nutrients from moisture and a minimal amount of sunlight. Mold and mildew can attach to anything including your skin and clothes. Mold reproduces at an alarming rate which is the reason it can grow reletivly quick. Black mold spores are a-sexual so they are a machine when it comes to reproducing clones of itself. Their growth rate is extremely accelerated. All it takes is moisture to sit for not even for a day and you will have mold growth. That is why it is always good to have your organic mold removal products ready in your time of need.

Black mold has a tendency to stick to anything that comes near it.
Mold can dominate an area so quickly is because the mold spores can use the wind to travel. If they don’t attach themselves to something they can travel by the use of the wind. And there is your answer as to how mold spores get inside your house. This is also how they spread from room to room inside the home as well. Removing these mold spores from your home is not easy. There are people who think bleach is the best answer. Bleach only gets rid of mold for a short period of time. Besides, when you are using the bleach you will get a headache just from t he smell alone? Most people can only bare with that smell for about 5 minutes. Bleach is only a temporary fix.you can be sure that you will be using the bleach again in a about a day or to because the mold will be back again. In order to be mold free you have to encapsulate the mold spores so they can’t survive.

In order to keep the home safe to live in you will need to focus on preventing the mold from coming in your home. The only way to keep these mold spores from invading your home is by starving it from all the nutrients it needs to survive. Of course, everyone has showers and bathrooms that are usually moist or humid, I understand. But, you could have a great mold killer that will help you win this war again black mold.

The key here is not to let the mold get the best of you. Never underestimate the schedule of cleaning because it will make your life a whole lot easier. If you decide to skip the cleaning one day then you will see mildew growing in the bathroom areas. Its always good to have a set time to clean up your home each and every week and make sure there is not mold growing. By taking these steps it will keep the mold out of your home and will be much healthier for you and your loved ones to live in.

One of the dangers that all home owners should be aware of is the spread of black mold throughout the home. the problem with black mold is that no one thinks that they have a problem with mold growth until they become ill. Since the mold has been growing for a long period of time it has become toxic which gives off deadly fumes that causes illness. This makes toxic mold such a deadly force because you could be inhaling deadly fumes as you read this and not even know it. Not many people believe how quick mold spores can reproduce in the home so i will help your judge for yourself.

I will be honest with you i just experienced a mold problem not more than 2 weeks ago. We live in Florida so we have the air conditioning running constantly. Normally when the a/c unit turns off it will darin the excess water through a pipe that leads outside. This was always working properly until recently. I listened to the a/c system when it turned off and it sounded like it was raining water on my water heating unit. I always thought the water was draining properly just like it always did. Boy was i wrong. I was shocked when i woke up the next day and noticed that my hallway was soaked with water. I took a peak at the a/c unit and realized that all the support wood beams and filter were drenched with water. But now i saw the real problem because the black mold had already began to spread on the wood and sides of the air conditioning unit. I started to worry that this mold was growing there for a good day or two. What makes this more scary is i have no clue of how long that mold was growing in there until this incident happened.

The main option i had was to figure out how and where this thing was leaking water from. The next issue i had to deal with was to find what natural mold removers were out there that were strong enough to help fix my problem. I suspected that the drain plug had something blocking it. I just went ahead and took a look at that first before i did anything else. And wouldn’t you know it, that was the problem. I looked inside the drain pipe and it was filled with mold and algae. I got my trusty natural mold cleaner and applied it to the inner portions of the drain pipe. It did a great job cleaning both the mold and the algae at the same time.

The next thing i had to do was get rid of all the mold spores that were in the carpet areas. I took a drive to the rental place and got a water vacuum device and sucked up most of the standing water in the carpet. Since the carpet was not dry in the hallway I squirted all the areas in the air conditioning closet and carpeting with the mold removers. I let it sit for about 20 minutes to let it really sink in. I made sure i used a dry rag on the walls to make sure they were not wet and mold free. after that i just got out my vacuum cleaner to scrub up the remaining mold from the carpet and let the brushes do the work for me.

Since then, I don’t have a spec of black mold growing in the air conditioning area. I can’t tell you how glad i am that i learned about this mold problem before i ran out of time. i was reading stories about how families had to leave their homes because the mold became toxic and was giving off toxic fumes therefore causing the living conditions to be unliveable. Thankfully, my timliness was the key to my success. Now i know to keep an eye on my air conditioning unit each and every day to make sure it won’t leak again.

Wet walls spell trouble. Learn all about identifying and killing mold before it kills you!

If you have wet walls, you’ll surely get mold. Wallboard, drywall, plywood, and other wet surfaces furnish mold a perfect place to grow. The material made in the construction of your walls is porous, so it offers the mold a great place to live.

Stachybotrys chartarum, an infamous type of toxic black mold that has a slightly greenish-black color, is often found in wet walls. Unlike your shower mold, which is non-toxic, this mold grows often in building materials.

If you have wet walls in your house, you should remove the material immediately and make sure the black mold doesn’t come back.

Getting Rid Of The Moldy Walls

One giant mistake people often make is trying to paint over the water damaged spots on their walls. This won’t do anything! In face, mold can get taller in truth well on paint.

What you have to do is take off the wet portions of the wall. Remove all the wet wall as hastily as viable, before mold has a chance to grow. Before you take it off, spray it with water from a spray bottle. All the porous wall material should be wet when you remove it, so that you won’t be spreading mold spores universally.

Wear defensive clothes, make sure the area has enough of air circulation and dispose of the moldy wall material unharmed. Put all the moldy substance in plastic bags for careful removal. It’s influential to not let the mold spores pollute the rest of the house.

Look close up at the dry parts to see if there’s mold hiding out behind it. You can just take off a small piece of the wall near the moldy area and check. In areas where the walls are wet, there is a good attempt that the adjacent dry walls will also have mold growing.

After the wet walls have been removed, spray the walls with a bleach solution. Be delicate with the bleach. Combining it with any other cleaning products can begin toxic fumes. You be supposed to barely use water in your bleach solution. Make it weak; no more than 1 part bleach to 1 part water. Bleach can irritate your nose, eyes and ears.

Use a scrub brush for the wall and make sure you get rid of all the mold. If some of the muck runs down to the floor, clean it up with a vacuum.

If possible, dispose of everything that has been in contact with mold. This includes drop clothes, but moreover the clothes that you were wearing. If you don’t want to get rid of your clothes, wash them effectively in hot water and bleach.

Keeping The Mold Out Of Your Walls

Prior to you install any another stuff, make sure the wall has dried out totally. You can run a dehumidifier in your basement or anywhere the wet walls were to speed up the progression. Just make sure it’s wholly dry before you inaugurate construction again.
